Assassin's Creed Valhalla: 4 Ways to Farm Opals for Reda's Shop

This post covers how to collect Opals, the currency you can use to buy rare items in Assassin's Creed.

There's a character named Reda in Assassin's Creed Valhalla. He appears as a young boy, and this same boy shows up looking exactly the same in Origins — one of the mythology trilogy — as a merchant who sells rare goods. For reference, the time gap between the two games is 900 years...

In Valhalla, he sells rare goods (cosmetic/cash-shop items) to Eivor in exchange for Opals at Ravensthorpe, the Raven Clan's settlement.

What Are Opals?

Opals play exactly the same role that Orichalcum did in the previous game, Assassin's Creed Odyssey. 'Opals' are a currency that lets you buy from Reda items that you normally can't obtain in Valhalla — items otherwise sold in the shop accessible from the menu using Helix Credits, which you get only after paying real money.

Opals are a currency, but they can't be used anywhere other than trading with Reda, and you also can't buy or sell Opals themselves.

Today I'll introduce 4 routes for obtaining Opals.

1. Picking Them Up in the Field ( + Opal Map )

A lot of people already know the first method, and I think many of you have occasionally picked up a glowing item that turned out to be an Opal.

They're scattered all over the field, though I'm not sure whether they keep respawning. In my case, I didn't spend money on Valhalla items, so I didn't buy the treasure maps sold in the external Valhalla shop either — but the number of Opals you naturally pick up while playing was actually quite a lot.

If you want to pick up even more Opals in the field, you can buy the Opal map from the external Valhalla shop. Like other treasure maps, the Opal map can be bought with Helix Credits, and once purchased it marks icons on your map.

The icons marked with red circles below are Opals. Even though the screenshot shows only a tiny part of the Valhalla map, there's a large number of Opals scattered around.

The Opal icon positions in the screenshot seem to be the same for all players. From the few spots I checked, the Opals appear to be in the same locations as in the screenshot below. If that's the case, is there even any need to buy the Opal map..

2. Thousand Arms Daily & Weekly Quests

The second method is to complete the daily and weekly quests that refresh from Reda and the kids belonging to his organization/guild, the Thousand Arms.

If you play Valhalla consistently, this is a method that lets you earn Opals steadily too. You can pick up the missions from Reda at the Ravensthorpe settlement, and also from the Thousand Arms kids scattered across other regions.

Aside from Reda, the other Thousand Arms kids are mostly found in cities like Lunden, and also in Francia and Ireland which you reach via DLC. Once you take a mission in one region, you can't take a mission in another region. In other words, you can only do 1-3 missions a day.

The missions are all easy and very simple quests. For example, they're as easy as assassinating a target or hunting an animal, so you really don't need to worry about difficulty.

When you complete these quests, daily quests give you 5 Opals and weekly quests give you 20 Opals.

3. Getting 50 Opals as a Season Reward

Next up are the Opals given as season rewards. AC Valhalla gets updates each quarter along with limited-time events and the like, and during these periods it sometimes gives a whopping 50 Opals as a season reward. If you didn't know about this, you've probably got a lot stacked up!

The way to get them is simple. First, from the menu screen, click the UBISOFT CONNECT menu.

An overlay screen like the one above will appear, so go into the 'Rewards' tab right in front of you.

In the Rewards tab, you can exchange the coins you earn by playing Ubisoft games for various Assassin's Creed items. Quite a few of the items are free, so I recommend taking a look.

Scroll down a bit and you'll see Season 3 - Opal Drop or Season 4 - Opal Drop; click it.

Once you've successfully claimed the Opal reward, you'll see a screen like the one above!

4. Doing Time-Limited Challenges on Ubisoft Connect

This is the last method. It uses Ubisoft Connect, which I introduced in the third method. Bring up the UBISOFT CONNECT overlay as before, but this time go into the 'Challenges' tab instead of the 'Rewards' tab.

Select the 'Challenges' tab

The 'Challenges' tab has 'Core' missions and 'Time-Limited' missions. You can think of Core missions as being a bit like achievements. They give you the XP and U-coins you need to raise your Ubisoft account level. Time-Limited missions are, as the name says, missions that reward you if you clear them within a limited time (usually a week).

Since we want to get Opals, we just need to clear the Time-Limited missions.

Previously you had to accept and clear each mission one by one like Reda's missions, but now you just clear it and hit claim reward.

Most missions reward Opals, and occasionally give tattoos or longship cosmetic items and the like. The mission difficulty is much harder and more tedious than Reda's missions — things like 100 stealth kills... or playing the boring drinking-contest game, and so on.

Still, if you want to pull in the maximum amount of Opals, I recommend doing them. The missions refresh once a week and reset around Thursday.

Wrap-Up

In this post we looked at how to get the maximum amount of Opals. As mentioned earlier, Opals are needed to obtain the cash-shop items (?) that can otherwise only be bought with Helix Credits, and since these items perform well and are fun, I wrote this for anyone who might be curious. I hope it helps.
