Hello — today I've brought news that Pokémon game fans will absolutely love. Let's dive in.
A New Challenger Appears in the Pokémon World! ?
'PokéRogue', a roguelike fangame based on the Pokémon series' battle system, has been hugely popular lately. The game was reportedly made under the influence of Risk of Rain 2, a flagship title of the roguelike genre.
What is PokeRogue?
PokeRogue is a web game you can play on the official site, and you can also run it on PC or mobile via GitHub. As of May 30, 2024, a Korean version was also released, so Korean users can enjoy it comfortably too.
Unlike the typical Pokémon series, there's no map exploration at all — it adopts a roguelike format in which a random item is granted each wave. Only mainline-style Pokémon battles exist, and battles are split into waves like wild battles, trainer battles, and boss battles.
Play Link ?
You can play it right now too. It's a 'web' game you can play as long as you have internet — no need to buy the game or use a client like Steam. That really seems like an advantage. When I was playing, the number of online players reached nearly 50,000, so it seems to be enjoying tremendous popularity.
PokéRogue
A Pokémon fangame heavily inspired by the roguelite genre. Battle endlessly while gathering stacking items, exploring many different biomes, and reaching Pokémon stats you never thought possible.

Enjoy an Endless Challenge!
This game features every Pokémon from Gen 1 through Gen 9, and it also includes battle gimmicks like Mega Evolution and regional forms. There's no level cap, so you can even encounter Pokémon at hundreds or thousands of levels — there really are a lot of interesting challenges.
The thing that impressed me most personally was the Pokérus system. A new Pokérus Pokémon appears each day, and these give 1.5x experience and can even spread the infection to other Pokémon. Thanks to elements like this, it seems you can set up a new strategy every time.
I thought the Pokérus system was original, but apparently it existed before too — just extremely rare. Putting a system like this to use was really well done.
Enjoy a Variety of Modes!
PokeRogue offers various modes such as Classic Mode, Daily Run, Endless Mode, and Spliced Endless Mode. In Classic Mode you have to overcome 200 waves, the biome changes between waves, and you encounter boss Pokémon, trainers, Gym Leaders, and so on. Rival battles also happen at set waves, and in the final battle you face off against a Legendary Pokémon.
Personally, Endless Mode looks the most interesting. Unlocked once you clear Classic Mode, this mode lets you keep challenging new waves endlessly. I'm curious just how far you can go. You can also see the global rankings on the main screen, so it seems like a lot of people are taking on the challenge.
Beyond that, PokeRogue is full of fun elements, like collecting a Pokémon's candies to lower its cost or unlock its passive. They say the more you challenge yourself, the stronger you can get — so for fans, isn't this a game worth trying at least once?
And so a fun new challenge has opened up in the Pokémon world. Why not take on PokeRogue yourself? I hope what I've introduced so far has been helpful. I'll be back with more fun news next time. Thank you!
Recommended Pokémon for Clearing Classic Mode ?
Early on, I recommend playing with whichever Pokémon you personally like — that's what makes it fun. Then, if you get stuck, there are a few Pokémon I'd recommend.
There seem to be various roles — high-firepower Pokémon to serve as main and sub damage dealers, carry Pokémon to get you through the early game, Pokémon that can break through tough stretches with specific types and immunity moves, and so on. Personally, Tinkaton and Garganacl stood out to me as appealing.
Tinkaton is a Fairy/Steel dual type, which isn't only advantageous against the final boss — it also has powerful options thanks to its Hidden Ability and the Pure Power passive, so it seems well worth trying. Garganacl is likewise expected to be a big performer against bosses and trainers by combining Stealth Rock and Salt Cure.
Beyond that, the item-multiplying strategy using the Gimmighoul line is also interesting — it's high risk, but if you get the chance, it could be good to make active use of it.
Since the roguelike genre is fundamentally centered on enjoying various combinations, it's probably best to try out many strategies. New strategies and standout performances will likely keep emerging, so why not build a party in your own style? I hope this helps you clear Classic Mode!
How to Switch to Korean
For Korean, press the R key in settings, then under the Display tab > Language (Requires Reload), press the Change button on the right and switch it to Korean.
Pokémon Fangames and the Road Ahead
As someone who has enjoyed Pokémon games since childhood, I was really happy to see this fangame. As more fangames like this come out, it seems they'll have a big influence on the mainline games too. In particular, people seem to love it a lot because a genre they'd only imagined was released as a fangame with such high polish.
I think the fact that it's a web game played a big part — usually Pokémon games can only be played on a Nintendo console and the titles are sold at a high price of over 60,000 won, so accessibility wasn't great. As a web game, the fact that so many people can play it seems like a huge advantage.
YouTube Recommendation
Personally, I enjoyed watching a playthrough video by the YouTuber Oknyang-i. If you're stuck or want to watch it as a video, it could be worth a look.
